About This Course

What are Nature-based Solutions?

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are defined as “actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits”. Cohen-Sacham, 2016

The Opportunity for the Finance Sector:

To enhance the flow of ecosystem services that hold the key to the realization of Kenya's Vision 2030, there is a need for a financial system that promotes sustainable economic development. Financial institutions are responsible for financing investments in the agricultural, manufacturing, housing, infrastructural, energy and extractive industries. Financial systems can enable economic activities that factor sustainability of natural systems by shaping how money flows, and how it can positively influence the flows for environmental benefit. As Kenya strive’s to emerge from the current pandemic and move towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it is imperative that future investments in nature reach their potential by contributing to the health and well-being of people and the planet. It is against this background that the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) module has been developed in conjunction with IUCN.
