About This Course

Welcome to the Green and Blue Economy Training. This module seeks to explore how the Finance Sector can facilitate the Blue and Green economy activities, initiatives, programmes and projects towards advancing the Sustainable Development agenda.

What is a Green Economy?

A Green Economy is defined as an economy that aims at reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities, with focus on sustainable development without degrading the environment.

A Green Economy results in improved human well‐being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities (UNEP, 2011).

What is a Blue Economy?

The Blue Economy (BE) is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, and ocean ecosystem health. The Blue Economy encompasses many activities including renewable energy, fisheries, maritime transport, tourism, climate change, waste management etc.

According to the United Nations and World Bank, “the “Blue Economy” concept seeks to promote economic growth, social inclusion, and the preservation or improvement of livelihoods while at the same time ensuring environmental sustainability of the oceans and coastal areas”.

Mission; How Can the Finance Sector Facilitate A Green and Blue Economy?

To achieve the SDGs it is paramount to finance green growth which entails financing cross-cutting and multi sector economic activities through the Finance Sector. The Sector therefore plays a critical role in shifting finance towards a sustainable pathway and leading to environmental and social risk management.

Transitioning economies to a sustainable pathway can be achieved by developing and implementing Green and/or a Blue Economy models which are inclusive and participatory at all levels.
